An older house I owned years back, the door bell worked fine most of the time. Each time we heard the door bell, we would go to the door and find someone standing there. All of us, including visitors, heard the door bell. About a year later, sometimes it would ring just as soon as someone was walking up to the porch, and twice it rang when someone was driving down the street to visit us. One time the door bell did not work at all, and the visitors had to knock on the door. We just assumed that the door bell was starting to have malfunctions.
While I was later painting the house, I hollered at my wife to come see something odd. While she was standing beside me in front of the front door, I asked her where the door bell button was. She looked all around the door frame, and upon not seeing a door bell button, she asked me where it was. I explained that I checked the heater closet where we had always heard the door bell, and I had also climbed up into the attic to trace the door bell wiring. There was none, not even a door bell transformer.
The house had never had a door bell installed; no hole in the wood door frame nor in the brick, nowhere whatsoever.
That house had a lot of history of similar oddities, but since my wife and I were accustomed to them, we simply grinned and went on with our daily routines.
Now, in another house, now that one was a lot of fun, and we still laugh about how my sister-in-law had ran out the front door while screaming. 😃
